Travelers’ Fee Can Help Fight Diseases

A United Nations program that has raised $1.2 billion over the past three years for the treatment of H.I.V./AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis through a small fee added to airline tickets sold in 15 countries is going global.

Starting in January, travelers in the United States and other countries buying airline tickets through some of the world’s largest booking companies — including Travelocity, Orbitz and other companies owned or served by Sabre, Travelport and Amadeus — will have the option of adding $2 to their cost to support the fund-raising efforts of Unitaid, which fights life-threatening diseases in poor countries.

CAPITAL CULTURE: Tourism Boom in Mr. Obama’s Old Chicago Neighborhood

A jogger has to alter his route because of security barricades. But a local barber shop is enjoying a tourism boom. And neighborhood residents have gained a reason to brag to friends — all thanks to President Barack Obama.

Although Obama and the first family have spent little time in Chicago since packing their bags for the White House in January, their presence is still felt around their old South Side neighborhood.

It’s most noticeable near their $1.6 million, red brick mansion, which sits just off a busy street, partially blocked from view by trees.

Iowa Tourists Arrested for Doing Nothing

A tourism gimmick in the southeast Iowa town of Kalona is giving new meaning to the phrase three hots and a cot.

Thousands of vehicles pass through the county on U.S. Highway 218 each day, and last Thursday chamber member Larry Moeller and Sheriff Jerry Dunbar set out to find a tourist to "arrest."

Two New Companies Let You Hop on a Private Jet for Less

It may not seem like the best time to launch a company catering to the private business flier.

Business travel is down. Companies have been pressured by an angry public to sell their corporate fleets. And at a time when environmental responsibility is critical to many consumers, few CEOs want to be called out for leaving a big carbon footprint.

But at least two new ventures are turning those challenges into selling points, offering services that allow you to fly private but preserve cash, the climate and possibly your corporate reputation.

Travel: 10 Restaurants Where You Can Watch the Stars

But don’t bother them — celebrities on both coasts have to eat, too

Remember that “I Love Lucy” episode when the always star-struck Lucy eats at Hollywood’s Brown Derby and finds William Holden sitting in the next booth? Hilarity, of course, ensues, with Lucy making a fool of herself trying to get Holden’s attention—not the first fan to try interacting with a celebrity trying to have a quiet dinner at a restaurant.
