Touring Chihuahua, Mexico

barranca del cobre divisadero

This city is known as one of the major cities, which make up Mexico’s Copper Canyon.  Chihuahua is not only famous because of the small dogs which bear this city’s name, Chihuahua is also home to The Copper Canyon area. The Copper Canyon area is sometimes compared to Arizona’s Grand Canyon, although this region is at least seven times the size, and has different topography than the Grand Canyon.

The Barranca del Cobre, or Copper Canyon as its called in English is a series of 20 canyons, formed over the years by six breathtakingly beautiful rivers.  These canyons make quite an impression and are well worth the visit to this region!

The city of Chihuahua is an outdoor paradise! It offers biking, fishing, hiking, rock climbing, eco tours as well as several guided tours of Chihuahua, as it is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Mexico. Chihuahua has amazing flora and fauna as well as over 400 different species of birds. Bird watchers will just love the opportunity to photograph these birds in their natural habitats!

Take a trip on the Chihuahua al Pacífico ( Chepe for short) railroad! This engineering marvel took almost 90 years to complete. The first Mexican train to traverse the complete route was in 1961. The route takes you through five climatic zones- from sea level to 8,000 feet above sea level! At one point the train does a 180-degree turn inside a mountain, and you will pass through the longest tunnel in Mexico. Deluxe lounge cars offer drinks and food and a place for camaraderie during your trip. This is a great way to spend the afternoon!

Perhaps you would like to explore the beauty of Chihuahua’s impressive natural landscapes by air with a Helicopter Tour of Divisadero Barrancas. On this exciting helicopter tour, you will have a panoramic, bird’s eye view of the mountainous terrain. The area is known for its heavily forested landscape and rugged mountain peaks. In fact, the areas of Divisadero and Barrancas sit at an eye-catching 7,000 feet above sea level. You may be able to spot the train you were just on earlier, as it winds through the mountains!

Whether you are catching a bird’s eye view of the Del Cobre, Urique and Tararecua canyons, hiking and fishing along the many riverbanks or discovering Chihuahua’s wildlife, this city is a wonderful experience for all!
