Hvolsvöllur, Iceland

This small town in southern Iceland has many points of interest for tourists to visit. It started developing in the 1930s and currently its inhabitants base their livelihood on the manufacture of meat products and tourism. Salmon and trout fishing in the nearby rivers almost always deliver great results.

One of the activities you can do here is visit different farms, which are located on the edge of rivers. Aegissida is a farm on the river Ytri-Ranga, just opposite the small town of Hella in the Southern Lowlands, near Hvolsvöllur. Here you can find 12 man-made caves, which have been excavated by the farmers for centuries. Some of the caves have carvings on the walls and ceilings, which could be connected to the Irish hermits, who lived there when the first Nordic settlers arrived.

Visit the Oddi Church, which dates back to the earliest days of Christianity and is said to be built based on supernatural sightings. The silver chalice in the church dates back to the 13th century and the architecture of the present-day church is very Nordic and typical of this region.

The town of Hvolsvöllur, is a great place to find different breeds of Nordic horses, and one of the best places to see them is at the Kirkjubaer Farm. The horses here are quite lovely and visiting the farm makes for a lovely afternoon for the whole family. Try some local home cooking which includes a variety of fish dishes and salads.

During your stay in this region, don’t be surprised to see many waterfalls, some towering up to 60 metres high! Many are quite easily accessible from the main road. You can even walk all the way around some of the waterfalls and this allows for some great photo opportunities!

Beautiful landscapes abound in the region of Stokkalaekur. The brook of the same name runs through a stunning gorge, decorated by a number of small waterfalls, with picturesque lava formations on one side, and rock formations on the other. In the background, you can also see Mount Tindfjoll which frame this oasis found at the edge of the highlands. From its peak, the panoramic view surrounding this fertile area is out-of –this –world!

Whether you are snapping pictures of Mount Thrihyrningur, enjoying a campfire surrounding by natural surroundings, or touring the Art Gallery I Gangi, the city of Hvolsvöllur will warm your heart and soul.
