The Snaefellsnes peninsula in western Iceland has a varied landscape and is a true treasure of Iceland. This area is less frequented by tourists because it is not as well known as other areas in Iceland, but those who come here have a unique opportunity to enjoy the solitude and tranquility found in the wild. You have the chance to observe various mountain passes, gorgeous waterfalls, hot springs, countless lava caves and the rugged beauty of the Icelandic highlands during your visit to Snaefellsnes.

Make sure to visit Búoir, a fair sandy beach located in the mystical Snaefellsnes peninsula. Continue onwards to Arnastapi along its magnificent columnar basalt formations, which are brimming with bird life in the summer months. Drive along the northern shores of the peninsula in order to visit tiny fishing villages and the picturesque town of Stykkishólmur.

Circle the legendary Snaefellsjökull Glacier, which covers a powerful central volcano. This glacier is unquestionably the crowning jewel of this region’s peninsula. This volcano-glacier is 1,446 meters (4,744 ft) high, and is the highlight of Snæfellsjökull National Park. When it’s sunny out, you can even see Snaefellsjökull from the capital Reykjavik, 120 kilometers (75 miles) away! This glacier and the surrounding town are thought to be one of the major energy centers of earth, with many spiritual attractions and activities. The French wrier Jules Verne loved this area so much; he used it as the opening scenery of his famous novel “ Journey to the Center of the Earth”.

Visit Gudridur’s Statue, which was erected in memory of the Viking woman Gudridur Thorbjarnardottir, who left Iceland to settle in the United States just after the year 1000. Just west of Hellnahraun lava-field, between Hellnar and Arnarstapi, is a spring that flows out from under the lava. The water here is used for healing and is known locally as Mary’s Spring as it was blessed by a bishop. The inhabitants of Hellnar brought a statue of Mother Mary here and put it up by the spring. The water does leave you feeling quite invigorated!

Whether you are enjoying a typical Viking feast at Guesthouse Brekkubaer, with all the trimmings including local music and entertainment, listening to the exotic melodies of Björk, or enjoying the view of one of the most hauntingly beautiful glaciers in the world, every tourist who comes to Snaefellsnes peninsula, will make some of the fondest of traveling memories.
