Visit the Museo del Fuerte, or the local museum. The outside décor is quite impressive and the inside is filled with exhibits and interesting facts, especially if you speak Spanish. The entrance fee is only 5 pesos (approximately 50 US cents), and it is very worthwhile. From the top of the museum, which is built like a fort, you also have a great bird’s eye view of the main river and the town.

The locals are very friendly and their smiles will invite you to join them for a swim down at the local bend in the river. Many local families go for a swim in the afternoons with their children. The water is very refreshing and this is a great activity, especially if you are traveling with children yourself.

Hummingbirds are a regular sight in El Fuerte. The best place to catch a sight of these amazing creatures is at the Hotel Posada del Hidalgo, which is located between the Town Square and the Museum.  This hotel is actually a beautiful colonial mansion, which was built in 1890 by Don Rafael Almada, a wealthy and influential "alcalde" or mayor of El Fuerte. Visit the courtyard of the hotel to catch the hummingbirds’ frolic to and fro.

Mexico’s lively culture is alive and well in El Fuerte, look for some of the fabulous mural paintings, which you can find around the city. During the weekends, don’t be surprised to hear Mariachi music being played in the town square, as the residents of El Fuerte are no different from other Mexican people who love to listen to their traditional music.
