Costa Rica, located in Central America is a country, which offers those who would like an experience in ecotourism a variety of parks, rivers, forests and volcanoes, as well as gorgeous beaches and rainforests. Costa Rica means “rich coast” in English, and this is certainly a great name for this fantastically diverse country!
Costa Rica is divided into twenty natural parks, eight biological reserves and a variety of protected areas, which really capture the imagination of those who love ecotourism. There are many excursions, which are available, including horseback riding, hiking among the mountains or guided tours of the rainforest.
This Central American destination is a paradise for bird watching lovers! There are over 850 different types of birds, which can be found in Costa Rica. From the oak forests located in the “ Cordillera de Talamanca”, which are the highest mountains in the region, to the tropical jungle located in the “ Peninsula de Osa” or Bear’s Peninsula, the birds you can discover here are vast in number, color and style. Don’t forget your cameras! There are also a diverse number of exotic plants and flowers including colorful orchids, which are extremely beautiful.
One of the most popular parks with tourists is called the “ Parque Nacional Tortuguero” or the National Turtle Park, and is famous for the number of marine turtles, which can be found here. The park has a number of natural canals and rivers, which are home to endangered species such as the crocodile and manati. A trip to this park is a fantastic way to spend the afternoon!
Another great way to spend your vacation is by visiting one of the sixty volcanoes, which are found scattered around the country. Head to the “ Cordillera Volcanica Central” or the “ Cordillera de Guanacaste” and you will be inspired by these magnificent creations of nature. You will be amazed when you reach the crater’s mouth and you have a chance of a lifetime to peer inside and be amazed! Some tours even offer horseback riding up to the crater, which offer amazing views, especially when the sun sets. There are still five volcanoes, which are considered active and include “ Rincón de la Vieja” or Old Lady’s Place, Turrialba, Poas, Irazu and Arenal.
Whether you are animal watching in the rainforest, swimming in one of many lakes and rivers, or admiring a gorgeous waterfall on your way to one of Costa Rica’s National Parks, this country is a perfect one for ecotourism enthusiasts everywhere!
