Visit the city of the Gods, Athens- Greece

Athens is indeed the city of the Gods. There are enough temples and ancient sites to visit to keep you occupied for days. Many of them are so impressive that you will only have to visit a handful to feel totally satisfied. But, for history buffs, visiting all the temples which are open to the public is a fantastic way to learn more about this amazing metropolis.

The Acropolis is the key attraction in Athens and it is simply spectacular.  The Acropolis overlooks the whole city and dominates the skyline. The structure which dominates the site is the Parthenon, and is a great photo opportunity for all. The Parthenon is built from the finest marble and is a true feat of architecture. Other attractions on the site are the ancient city’s entrance gate, known as the Propylai, and the onsite museum, which is full of interesting artifacts relating to Greece’s rich culture and history.

All in all, Athens has 28 museums to visit. They are dedicated to everything from ancient costume to musical instruments, although most are about the city’s ancient past. The arts were very important in Ancient Greek life, and you can witness the grandeur of the theatre of Dionysus, which still holds regular performances and are a part of modern Greek life as well. 

Enjoy a walk down the pedestrian area called “ The Plaka”, which is full of cafes and great restaurants, and is located very close to the Acropolis. For people who are looking for a place to party, head to the district of  Psiri, which is particularly popular amoung young people. Nightlife in Greece is known among Europeans as being some of the best on the continent. There are various types of bars and discotheques for people of all musical tastes, as well as clubs which have live music and dj’s to spin their tunes.

While in Athens, make sure to visit the Pynx, located in the souther part of the city. The Pynx is the actual building where the concept of democracy was born. Citizen assemblies met here and people began the trend of voting on matters of great importance to a country’s citizens.

Whether you are exploring the wonders of the Temple of Zeus, touring the site of the first ever Olympic Games which were held in 1895 inside the recently constructed Roman Stadium, or shopping in one of Athen’s unique boutiques, this vibrant city is waiting to be explored by you.
