One of the neat things about traveling overseas is the way goods and services are exchanged. In parts of Europe for example, bargaining is the way business is conducted. The haggling back and forth between yourself and the merchant can be fun as well as challenging.
However, once you get the hang of how it’s done you can come home with very nice souvenirs made all the more enjoyable because of the good price you were able to get.
Take a look at this list of the ten commandments of the successful haggler put together by Rick Steves:
- Determine if bargaining is appropriate
- Shop around and find out what locals are paying
- Determine what the item is worth to you
- Determine the merchant’s lowest price
- Look indifferent
- Employ a third person
- Impress the merchant with your knowledge
- Obey the rules
- Show the merchant your money
- If the price is too high just leave
