Stop at the Archaeological Museum of Olympia, which is one of the most important museums in all of Greece as it presents the history of this ancient country. The museum’s permanent exhibition contains finds from excavations dating back to prehistoric times as well as the Early Christian period. The museum is most famous for its sculptured ornaments from the Temple of Zeus, which include 42 statues as well as lion-headed water sprouts, which ran along the lengths of the temple. You can also see Hermes of Praxiteles, one of the masterpieces of ancient Greek art. Made from Parisian marble, this statue stands at 2,10 metres in height and dates back to 330 B.C. Its bronze collection is a very rich one indeed, and one of its most famous pieces, the Bronze Horse statue, dates back between the Geometric and the Archaic period. This is a museum, which is not to be missed!
Next on any history buff’s list, is a visit to the ancient temples. The Temple of Epikourios Apollo which is located in the town of Nea Figali is one of the most well-preserved ancient temples to be found anywhere in Greece. This magnificent temple was created in approximately 420 B.C. The temple was built in Doric style, and is similar to that of the Parthenon. It is a fabulous temple, which any visitor should visit!
Take a tour of Chlemoutsi Castle, built between 1220 and 1224, which is situated on top of a hill called Helonata. This is a very antique castle where visitors can enjoy an amazing view of the surroundings and observe the vegetation and rock formations down below.
