San Francisco has many attractions to offer tourists on a budget other than the fantastic views of the Golden Gate Bridge.

San Francisco, like many other lively cities is a great city to see on foot. The views from the Golden Gate Bridge are spectacular by car or by bus, however you can really soak up the atmosphere by strolling along the bridge on foot. Also, San Francisco Walking Tours offers tours to many different sites and a City Pass ($54 or  $39 for ages 5-17) will get you admission to many other tourist attractions. Fisherman’s Wharf and the Union Square are also favourites among visitors.

Transportation is reasonable in San Francisco as you can use the Bay Area Rapid Transit (also known as BART). This is a fast and inexpensive way of getting around the city. You can also travel to both the San Francisco Airport (SFO) and the Oakland Airport (OAK) by using BART.

Experience a ride on a cable car, which is typical of San Francisco. The fare is only $5 each direction and tickets can be purchased at street kiosks or on board the cable car.

Visit Twin Peaks Blvd for the best views of the city. Follow Portola Drive upward and you will be able to marvel at the great view, and best of all its a free attraction!

Don’t forget to visit the former island prison known as Alcatraz, which is one of San Francisco’s most famous landmarks. There is no admission fee as the National Park Service operates Alcatraz, however you have to buy a ferry ticket in order to get to the island. You can also combine your tour with visiting the Muir Woods National Monument, which is located just north of the city and offers a view of beautiful coastal redwood trees. Admission is only $3, and free for those less than 16 years of age.
