After being closed for several months, the popular tourist site Machu Picchu of Peru will be open once again to visitors this month. The ancient Inca site has attracted over 850,000 visitors in the previous year and is a major source of revenue for the Peruvian economy. The monument, which is often referred to as “The Lost City of the Incas,” is situated just north of Cusco, was closed most recently when powerful downpours caused mudslides to wash away railroad tracks, trapping several visitors at the site. During the closure of this Peruvian attraction, officials have opted to promote alternative tourist sites such as Moray, Tipon, Pikillacta, Sacsayhuaman, Pucapucara, Quenqo, and Tambomachay, but the news of the re-opening of Machu Picchu is great news for city’s economy.
The re-opening of Machu Picchu means that travelers will once again be able to partake in The Inca Trail on the way to Machu Picchu. This is an activity not to be missed by most daring travel enthusiasts. The challenging hike, which consists of uphill travel, climbs, and alternating heights, and monumental staircases, is not for the faint of heart. Travelers must not be sensitive to changes in altitude, unpredictable weather, and of course, they must be in good health. But if you’re willing to brave the hike, it’s one that comes with great rewards. The height of the trail provides uncompromised views of the city in combination with the clearest blue skies you’ll see. You’ll be astonished by the ancient Inca ruins that had once been lost for centuries, but now draw crowds of visitors from all over the world.
