Perched high on a hill overlooking the Mopan River, this complex was a major ceremonial centre during the classic Mayan period. From the top of the nearly 150 foot “ Castillo” or castle, one can see for miles, and on a clear day, you can see into neighbouring Guatemala! Hiring a guide once you are on the grounds, offers an informative way to see the ruins, and they speak anywhere between two and six languages each!
For animal lovers, the Jaguar Preserve (also known as the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary) has some of the best views of jaguars in Central America. The Sanctuary also offers great jungle hiking trails, and the plants are identified along the trails and many animals are waiting to be discovered by you- watch out for the spider monkeys! The entrance fee is only $10; you can camp for $5/person per night of stay in the dorm for $20/night. This Preserve is an unforgettable experience for all!
