Business Traveler: Surviving a Computer Crash on the Road

Waiting for my connecting flight in Houston, I’m tapping away on my laptop, editing slides and handouts for an upcoming presentation. Suddenly an error message flashes across the screen. Then the screen goes blank and my unfinished documents vanish.

Frantically, I begin pushing buttons on the keyboard, but nothing happens. I try rebooting, but my keyboard is locked. As a last resort, I press and hold the power button forcing the computer to shut down.

I hold my breath and push the power button again, but once more I am faced with a blank screen and an unresponsive computer. A wave of panic sets in, knowing my computer is dead and I’m on the outbound leg of a week-long business trip with an unfinished presentation locked inside my failed computer.

Has this ever happened to you? Unfortunately, it’s happened to me more than once and, for some inexplicable reason, always at the beginning of a long trip and never when I’m at home or on my way home again.
