Getting to Know New York City Before Your First Visit to the Big Apple!

Moving Around in New York City

The best way of getting around in the city is by using the New York Subway system. It is the most convenient, cheapest and fastest way to cover all the sights in the city. With just $2 a ride, you will have a lot of money left in your pocket to spend on other attractions in the city. An even better option would be to go for the monthly subway pass or a weekly pass depending on the length of your stay. Strongly networked throughout the city, the New York Subway System is your most reliable mode of transportation during your visit to the Big Apple.

Travel: Rental Car Taxes Are Getting Jacked Up

Anyone renting a car in Maine would be paying the state 12.5% of their bill in excise taxes starting last month if the legislature there had its way.

But residents blocked the state’s new tax-reform law — which included a tax increase from 10% to 12.5% on rental car bills — by signing petitions in opposition. If the signatures on the petitions turn out to be valid, the increase will be put to a vote in June, says Sara Lewis, a Maine taxation official.

Travel: First Space Hotel to Open in 2012

Adventurous travelers hoping to one day go into space received good news yesterday when the Barcelona based company behind the Galactic Suite Space Resort announced that their orbiting hotel will open for business in 2012, ushering in a new era in travel.

The world’s first space hotel will begin operations with just a single pod that can hold up to four guests and two pilots. Other pods will be added over time, increasing capacity as needed. The zero-g resort will orbit the Earth at 30,000 mph, completely circling the planet once every 80 minutes, while offering visitors 15 sunrises per day.

Travel: The Most High-Tech Hotel

What will the future hotel look like? We know that it will have plenty of high-tech features – beyond the Apple iPhone booking apps that many chains are scrambling to develop right now. But what will the next-wave tech functions do for hotel guests?

Patrick Mayock of Hotel New Now rounds up some examples discussed at LodgeNet’s 2009 Customer Technology Symposium in Atlanta last week.

Craig Mathias of Farpoint Group, an advisory firm that specializes in wireless networking and mobile computing, craves the day when hotels offer hotel guests new, high-tech ways to boost productivity such as:

Southwest Apologizes to Mom Kicked Off Flight

A spokesman for Southwest Airlines says the carrier has apologized to a mother who was kicked off a plane along with her unruly 2-year-old earlier this week.

Spokesman Chris Mainz said the airline called Pamela Root on Friday to apologize. He says Root also will receive a refund and a $300 travel voucher.

The crew bounced Root and her son Adam off the San Jose-bound flight because passengers could not hear preflight safety announcements.

Root says she was confident Adam’s screams of "Go! Plane! Go!" and "I want Daddy!" would subside after the plane took off Monday in Amarillo, Texas.

Can’t-Miss Holiday Gifts for Travelers

Like a tie for dad, a kitchen appliance for mom, or socks for the kids, there’s no shortage of holiday gift clichés for travelers. Wheeled luggage, ticket holders and inflatable pillows come to mind.

Shopping for someone who’s on the go isn’t easy. Travelers — especially frequent travelers — can be particular about their likes and dislikes. They wouldn’t be caught dead with a certain headset, phone, or piece of luggage.

Travel: A Tour of Literary Manhattan

Holly Golightly kept me company — courtesy of Truman Capote’s "Breakfast at Tiffany’s" — on my latest trip to Manhattan. It was an excursion that combined my passion for books with my love of travel.

The tale of the flighty Golightly’s time in New York City was ideal for my unusual obsession: When I travel, I absolutely must read a novel set in the place I am visiting. Whether it’s current — or like Capote’s novella, 50 years old — doesn’t matter. What I crave is the novelist’s perspective, and I delight in walking past the places I am discovering in a book.

Travel: 5 Ways to Beat the Competition to the Overhead Bin

There’s nothing so gauche as to stick your carry-on into an overhead bin far ahead of your seat, grab a book or magazine from it and walk 17 rows back to your seat. Because, whether you know it (or give a damn), one of the passengers sitting under your bag may not have a place to put his. Then, when the plane settles in at the gate, he’ll try to shove his way to the back of the plane (where he was forced to stow his stuff) while everyone else is moving the other way. It’s a recipe for disaster.

And, it’s getting worse.
