When most people think of Rio de Janeiro, one image comes to mind- carnival time in February on the beaches of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. But this energetic city has so much more to offer its many visitors! The city is nestled in majestic beauty, with a glorious bay, dazzling beaches and a sharply rising mountain range covered by tropical vegetation.

For a combination of beaches, sports, sun, exotic parks, mountain views, dancing and drinking, Rio de Janeiro is definitely the city for you! Rio ceased to be Brazil’s capital in 1960, however it is Brazil’s second largest city, and is one of the most densely populated city on earth with 6 million inhabitants.

Rio’s world famous beaches are free for all, as surfing is a very popular pastime. The legendary Copacabana beach is always lively, with tourists and locals both playing beach volleyball as the rhythms of samba music echo in the background. Watch or participate as groups of adolescent boys play soccer on the beach, one of Brazil’s most favorite pastimes. The boardwalk is filled with stands and kiosks selling everything imaginable, including cold beer and shrimp on a stick.

Ipanema beach is known for its beauty as well, and it is laden with numerous boutiques. Brazil’s wealthy like to come here on the weekends to enjoy the sand and sun.

Culturally speaking, Rio’s museums and privately funded cultural centers are filled with history. The Museu Historico Nacional (The National Historic Museum) boasts a collection of over 30,000 items, including toys made out of ivory which were once owned by the imperial family. At the Mosteiro de Sao Bento (Saint Bento Monastery) you can view a richly adorned interior with silver chandelier and ceiling paintings, which will take your breath away.

Of course a trip to Rio would not be complete without the thrill of visiting Corcovado, a stunning mountain topped by the world famous sculpture of Cristo Redentor (Christ the Redeemer), which rises more than a hundred feet and is seated on a twenty foot pedestal. Take the 1885 cogwheel train or reach this famous spot by driving on a winding road with great beach views.  

Whether you are tanning on Copacabana beach, swaying to the rhythms of boss nova music in the local clubs on the beach or watching an exciting game of soccer in their world-class stadium, Rio de Janeiro is not only a party city, it is a city which will make your soul dance.
