Travel: The Most High-Tech Hotel

What will the future hotel look like? We know that it will have plenty of high-tech features – beyond the Apple iPhone booking apps that many chains are scrambling to develop right now. But what will the next-wave tech functions do for hotel guests?

Patrick Mayock of Hotel New Now rounds up some examples discussed at LodgeNet’s 2009 Customer Technology Symposium in Atlanta last week.

Craig Mathias of Farpoint Group, an advisory firm that specializes in wireless networking and mobile computing, craves the day when hotels offer hotel guests new, high-tech ways to boost productivity such as:

Southwest Apologizes to Mom Kicked Off Flight

A spokesman for Southwest Airlines says the carrier has apologized to a mother who was kicked off a plane along with her unruly 2-year-old earlier this week.

Spokesman Chris Mainz said the airline called Pamela Root on Friday to apologize. He says Root also will receive a refund and a $300 travel voucher.

The crew bounced Root and her son Adam off the San Jose-bound flight because passengers could not hear preflight safety announcements.

Root says she was confident Adam’s screams of "Go! Plane! Go!" and "I want Daddy!" would subside after the plane took off Monday in Amarillo, Texas.

Spooky Walking Tours

How old does an area have to be to merit the name “Old Town”? In the case of Albuquerque’s downtown, the answer is just over three centuries.

Founded in 1706, Old Town has accumulated enough crime and punishment to qualify as a major hub of the supernatural in a state that already attracts some truly inexplicable activity. (Why did the aliens land at Roswell, anyway?)

Surviving the Talkative Airplane Seatmate

All I wanted to do was to fall asleep in my tiny seat on the last leg of a grueling day of air travel, when I was cornered by the Talkative Airplane Seatmate — a species oblivious to yawns and one-word answers.

My chatty neighbor was a forklift accident expert — a job he described in great detail as my eyelids grew heavier and heavier.

I mentioned that I was barely functioning after an 11-hour flight from China to California, followed by a six-hour layover at San Francisco International Airport.

Laptops to Blame for Pilots Passing Landing Destination

Two Northwest Airlines pilots used laptop computers in the cockpit and didn’t pay attention to their duties as they flew past their Minneapolis destination last week, according to federal regulators and airline officials.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said Monday that the two veteran pilots told investigators that they flew for 78 minutes without speaking to controllers because they became so engrossed in a new computer program that arranges pilot schedules.

Take a Walk Down Memory Lane with Ten Vintage Airline Commercials

Taking a page out of the "they don’t make them like this any longer" book, I’ve compiled a list of 10 fantastic vintage airlines commercials.

Take a walk down memory lane with me, and see how flying looked back in the 70’s, or listen to people tell you how awesome their (now bankrupt) airline is.

This article originally appeared on Gadling last year, but as part of our closer look at vintage America, the video clips have been updated and refreshed.

Ban Alcohol on Board?

Don’t drink and fly.

Words to live by, not just if you’re a pilot, but if you’re a passenger.

Sandra Langer explains why: On a recent trip from Amsterdam to New York, she watched a good number of her fellow passengers get hammered. “Red-faced men blocked the aisles, puked in the bathroom and groped the females — along with a laughing crew,” says Langer, a writer who lives in New York.

That’s right, some crewmembers were also inebriated. The trip made a lasting impression on Langer. “Never again will I take a connecting flight through Amsterdam,” she says.

Disney’s Cultured Cruises for Kids in Europe

For families with children, travel to Europe can be daunting. Packing and unpacking and deciding where to go and eat is more difficult with kids in tow. However, Disney Cruise Line is setting out to make it easy for families to visit Europe.

In April, the Disney Magic will return to Europe, where it first sailed in 2007, only this time with a few new itineraries. The Magic will offer 10,11, and-12-day cruises to Scandinavia, Germany and Russia, in addition to a lineup of Mediterranean itineraries that include calls at three new ports. And in each port Disney will add its magic touch to enhance the touring experience.

Airlines Raising Fares Again

The last of the major network airlines matched a $10 increase in the price of many round-trip tickets, making it likely that the fare boost will stick.

By Friday, United and US Airways had matched the increase that was already in place at Delta, Continental and American, said Rick Seaney, CEO of FareCompare.com, a travel Web site that tracks ticket prices.

Seaney said it was the fifth increase in U.S. ticket prices this year. Airlines sometimes roll back fare increases after a day or two, but Seaney said that was unlikely to happen this time because the major players matched the hike so quickly.
