Awards season is well on its way with news of nominations from the Independent Spirit Award nominees as well as this year’s hosts for the 2010 Academy Awards released last week. The Academy Awards is clearly aiming for a change this year with their announcement of co-hosts Anne Hathaway and James Franco, who unlike previous hosts are much younger and are both actors, not necessarily known for their comedic abilities. This may be a tactic from the Academy to encourage younger viewers to tune in to the awards show in February, which was previously hosted by Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin. While few have questioned whether Hathaway and Franco are fit to host the legendary Oscar Awards, we’ll have to tune in when it airs in February to see if they can really pull it off.
As for the Independent Spirit Award nominees, The Kids Are All Right, Black Swan, and Winter’s Bone were all films that were mentioned. All three movies were also nominated for the Gotham Film Awards. These are just the first of a crop of nominees to be announced for the coming awards season, which includes the Grammys, the Tonys, the SAG Awards, the Emmys, and more.
