New York City has long been associated with Broadway musicals.  The theater has recently revived classic performances such as Chicago and West Side Story, but many may be unfamiliar with their newer shows, such as “Promises, Promises” and “Million Dollar Quartet.”

Based on the 1960’s film “The Apartment”, “Promises, Promises” is a musical comedy that stars Sean Hayes of “Will and Grace” fame, as well as actress Kristin Chenoweth, from “The West Wing.”  Hayes plays Chuck, an insurance agent, who pursues an office romance with Chenoweth, who plays Fran.  In hopes of being granted a promotion, Chuck lends the executives of his company his apartment to use for their adulterous trysts.  But the arrangement becomes complicated when Fran later becomes the mistress of one of his executives. The musical has already earned critic praises as well as several Tony Award nominations including Best Lead Actor and Best Choreography.  “Promises, Promises” is actually a revival that was first introduced in 1968, during which it was nominated for Best Musical.

Another attraction that has entertained avid musical fans is “Million Dollar Quartet”.  Anyone who enjoyed “Jersey Boys” should surely attend this show.  The jukebox musical is based on a historic jam session in 1956 between rock legends Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, and Jerry Lee Lewis at Sun Records in Memphis.  Fans of these superstars will thoroughly appreciate the shows songbook, which includes classic hits like “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Hound Dog,” and “Folsom Prison Blues.” The show is told through the eyes of Sam Phillips, who was the founder of Sun Records, and doing so familiarizes the audience with what a central role he played in the careers of these legends.  Although the production is entertaining, it also delves into the complicated feuds between the characters and the record label.
