The city of Page is situated in the extreme north-central part of Arizona and is considered the gateway to Glen Canyon National Recreation Area and Lake Powell. It was first created as a company town for the construction of the Glen Canyon Dam in the 1960’s; it has steadily grown, adding more and more amenities, which are not usually experienced in a small desert town. The Bureau named the city after John C. Page, who oversaw the construction of the Hoover Dam. It now has many tourists, who come to enjoy Page’s wide range of activities.
Today Page has 6,800 citizens and sits on Manson Mesa between two of the largest electrical generation units in the West. Even though it has a small population, there are endless activities to do for people of all ages.
For those who love the heat, you will love Page’s summers, which are nice and hot. Spring weather is variable, and fall weather is nice and mild. Many snowbirds come down to this town to escape the icy grip of winter.
Shopping lovers will be impressed with the southern portion of the Great Basin Desert, as Page has become a strong regional shopping area with national store chains. Page is a young town with the average age between 33 and 40 years of age, and who’s energy is contagious.
Nature lovers will find many typical desert species in Page, such as cactus, yucca, black brush and rabbit brush. Pinion and juniper trees grow at higher elevations. Animal inhabitants include coyotes, foxes, lizards and insects. Alcoves in side canyons provide suitable habitat for deer, beaver, ravens, eagles, hawks, owls, sparrows and swallows.
Make sure that you visit Rainbow Bridge, which is considered a sacred place by the Navajo Natives, for whom personified rainbows have stood as guardians of the universe. This natural wonder is nestled among canyons carved by streams en route to the Colorado River from Navajo’s Mountain north flank. With a span of 275 feet, Rainbow Bridge gracefully arches to a height of 290 feet. The top is 42 feet thick and 33 feet wide. If you go in the afternoon, the sunlight makes the salmon-pink coloration of the rock especially brilliant.
Whether you are visiting the amazing Hoover Dam, bird watching near the Colorado River, or enjoying a boat ride on Lake Powell, Page is a city, which will bring a smile to your face when you think of the fond memories you made while visiting her charms.
