Washington D.C., synonymous with the District of Columbia, is located in the middle of the Potomac river, Maryland, and Virginia. It was founded on July 16, 1970 as a federal district in accordance with the United States Constitution. It was purposefully planned to be a federal district to keep it distinct from the 50 U.S. states. Washington D.C. was named after George Washington, the first president of the United States.

Touring Washington D.C. is rich with United States history and culture. Starting in the middle of the city is the National Mall, which is full of monuments to American leaders. It is also a great connecting point to the White House and United States Capitol buildings. Located in the center of the mall is the Washington Monument. The Library of Congress is home to the Declaration of Independence, The Bill of Rights, and the Constitution. There are many tributes to notable U.S. Presidents including the: Jefferson Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, and the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial. Washington D.C. is also full of tributes to some of the most heart wrenching events is U.S. and World History including: United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, National World War II Memorial, Korean War Veterans Memorial and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
