Trip To New Orleans Highlighted By Paczki

Paczki

Today is a special day. Why, you ask? Well, for one thing we have Fat Tuesday or as it’s more commonly known, Mardi Gras. And it just so happens that this year, it falls on the same day as that other well-known holiday, National Pancake Day. That’s right, the two land on the same day making this perhaps the hardest day to make meal decision.

Taking a trip to New Orleans often includes the famous dish, paczki (pronounced “POONCH-key”), which is described as a round Polish pastry similar to a doughnut, usually filled with fruit and topped with sugar or icing. Sounds delicious, but delicious enough to make you forget about National Pancake Day?

National Pancake Day is believed to have originated in Olney, England in 1444 when a housewife, making pancakes, heard bells summoning her to service. Not wanting to give up on frying pancakes, she is said to have rushed to church while carrying her frying pan, complete with the pancake, while also wearing an apron and headscarf.

While you might not be able to make a trip to England in time to celebrate National Pancake Day, there is still time to take a tour of New Orleans in order to get your very own paczki. The natives swear by this sweet dish and it makes the trip to New Orleans worth putting up with the crowds that make up the Mardi Gras. Just make sure to watch out for flying beads.
