The World’s Happiest Cities

Ever since Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers appeared in the 1933 film Flying Down to Rio, the world has been fascinated with Rio de Janeiro. Popular perception of the city is infused with images of starry-eyed youngsters dancing into the dusk, backed by imposing mountains and dark sea.

That view has propelled Rio to the top of our list of the world’s happiest cities. Famous for its annual Carnaval festival (starting Feb. 13 next year), the second-largest metropolis in South America finished first among 50 cities in a recent survey conducted by Simon Anholt, an author and policy adviser.

Vacationing in Hurricane Season

Hitchhiking Still Rare Despite Recession

A few decades ago, hitchhiking was something of a rite of passage among American youth. Chip Peterson, who graduated from high school in the 1960s, well remembers hitchhiking’s glory days. In the ’60s and ’70s, Peterson hitchhiked an estimated 100,000 miles across the U.S. and Latin America. He even spent his honeymoon thumbing through Colombia and Venezuela with his new bride. "I can remember times you’d have to line up for a ride," says Peterson, "because there were so many hitchhikers on the road."
